I’m guessing that you are probably thinking what I did … there’s no way you can get solar panel cost down to less than $200 per panel.  But the bottom line is that you really can!  And it’s easier to do it than you might think.

If you recall my story I was really wanting to get some cost effective residential solar panels.  I tried a set of used panels but they cost an arm and a leg and they didn’t work very well.

I was pretty frustrated after the last episode with the used panels so I hopped on the computer and was searching around for good solutions.  I found a forum accidentally that had an interesting thread about building your own solar panels.  I was intrigued and settled in for the read.

Well, these folks had found several sources for DIY solar panel plans.  There were pros and cons to each of these plan sets, but one of them jumped to the head of the pack.
This product had a few down sides, mainly the price seemed a bit steep at first, but after reading about what you got for it, the price didn’t seem so bad.

A Finished Solar PanelOn the flip side, these plans were detailed, step by step, and even came with instructional videos.  And to top it off, several bonus products were thrown in for free including plans for DIY wind turbines!

So I bought the plans.  The money back guarantee made it a no brainer. Check out this picture that came from the plans. Looks great, right?

I downloaded the plans and videos, and checked it out.  It looked pretty straight forward, but I needed to get some parts.  I didn’t really want to go back to town so I took the easy way out and went shopping on the Internet.

Well, about $150 later I was good to go.  When everything showed up I reviewed it and set everything aside for the next weekend.  I couldn’t wait to get started on my new solar panels!

Overall, the construction took me about a day and I ended up with a great solar panel.  Unfortunately it was cloudy outside so I couldn’t really test it but the forecast for the next day was sun!

Sure enough, the next day I was able to test out the new solar panel I made.  I was floored to find that I was getting just as much power as you’d get from a commercial solar system!  And remember, the solar panel cost less than $200 for me to make.

Fast forward a few weeks and I had a whole set of panels made up.  I even built a residential wind turbine with the plans and my farm house was complete.  My son took a nice picture of it the other day so I thought I’d show you what I ended up with.  Enjoy!

I was tempted.  Really, I was.  It seemed like a great way to reduce my solar panel cost.  I was so tempted, in fact, that I went and bought some used solar panels.

Good grief, what a mistake THAT was!  I bought a pair of used solar panels and they were useless.  I installed them in a temporary mounting bracket so I could test them out.  I was so excited!

Well, what I wasn’t expecting was to get next to no power out of the darn things.  Yes, you heard me.  These used solar panels were so used up that they didn’t produce enough current.

Back to the drawing board!  Luckily I was able to get a refund for the panels, but not before I had to threaten up and down to chargeback on my credit card.

What was I going to do?  I needed residential solar panels, there was no doubt about it.  But so far my efforts to find a cost effective solution with low solar panel prices wasn’t getting me anywhere.

Cue the Internet!  But I can hear you now.  You’re asking “Jason, what did you find?” to which I’ll simply respond … later!  I need to head to work but I’ll write more when I can.

Hey there, this is Jason.  I was so frustrated with solar panel cost effectiveness.  I wanted to go green and lower my energy bills.  Solar power seemed to be the natural solution!

But then I priced it out.  Good grief!  Solar panels are ridiculously expensive.  Who knew that the cost of a solar panel, which isn’t really all that complicated, could be so high?

And don’t get me started on the cost of solar panel installation.  How people can charge that much for super simple installations is beyond me.  It’s practically criminal!

But any how, I bought an old farm house that was too far away from the grid to actually plug in, so I was pretty much forced to find a solution to my energy plans.  I needed to figure out how to get a good residential solar energy system, but I had to keep the solar panel cost down to a reasonable amount.

Well, I found a solution.  And it was a darn good one.  It brought my price down to less than $200 per panel.  Amazing!
